Presentation of the Lord – Year C
This Sunday, February 2nd, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas. It is one of the few feasts which, if it falls on a Sunday, replaces the Sunday Mass prayers and readings. It commemorates two key events: the ritual purification of Mary 40 days after Jesus’ birth and the presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple at Jerusalem. We see Jesus being acclaimed by Anna and Simeon in the temple and Simeon, holds up the baby Jesus, declaring Him to be a Light to the World. Simeon’s proclamation, “Now, you can let your servant go in peace… for my eyes have seen you salvation”, is proclaimed every night in Compline, the Night Prayer of the Church. There is a medieval tradition regarding this as the conclusion of Christmas.
